September Wrap Up and October TBR

Read in September: Historical Mystery

Another good month, although not as good as last month. Although honestly I don't think I could do better than last month. But with everything else going on in my life I think it's pretty good. In September I read a total of 14 books. There were a lot of audiobooks and two were comics, but still. A great reading month which is especially good because it was a super busy month for me. October will also be just as busy probably as I just moved and am now getting settled in Rhode Island. Anyway, as far as the books go I read some really good books this month. I really enjoyed a lot of the books I read, which is so good because I was super looking forward to many of them.

For challenges, I am doing okay but not as well as I would hope on some of the individual challenges. I lowered my Goodreads goal to 100 books for the year and that was a really good decision because I completed it this month. I raised it to 120 but may raise it to 150 which is what my original goal for the year. But we'll see how I feel at the end of the month when I hopefully finished that goal. But I like being ahead of that challenge and I feel much better about meeting my goals. I am also on track for the Debut Author Challenge of 25 debuts. This month I only read 1 debut, making my total for the year 19. If I make sure to read a few during the next two months I will definitely meet that goal for the year. For the Netgalley/Edelweiss Challenge, I read 4 books this months which makes my total 30 for the year. I'm thinking the 36 target is still doable as all I'll have to do is read 2 a month until the end of the year. For the Rock My TBR Challenge I read 1 book for that this month towards my goal of 25 for the year bringing my totally up to 12 for the year. I'm definitely behind on this one but I might be able to meet the actual challenge goal of 15. And finally, I did 1 post for the Discussion Challenge, making my total 10 for the year which is on track for my goal of 12.

To Be Read in October: Magical Realism

I am so excited for this month's theme. I've been really enjoying Magical Realism these days and I'm so excited to read some more this month. Plus there are going to be some super exciting debuts and some highly anticipated reads by favorite authors and some that I have heard really good things about. I hope it's going to be another good month.

The Memory Trees by Kali Wallace - Add to Goodreads
I'm part of the blog tour for this book and am super excited to read it. It sounds like a total me book. It fits better with last month's theme but I'm reading it this month so whatevs.

Wild Beauty by Anna-Marie McLemore - Add to Goodreads

I have loved every single one of Anna-Marie's other books and I am so excited to read this beauty. It sounds amazing and is the reason why I am doing this theme.

Forest of a Thousand Lanterns by Julie C. Dao  - Add to Goodreads
I have heard really good things about this debut and I was so excited to get a copy at ALA. A copy that I really want to read this month.

All the Crooked Saints by Maggie Steifvater - Add to Goodreads
I love Maggie. I have loved all her books that I have read. I'm excited for her next book and to see her take on Magical Realism. Based on The Raven Boys I assume it is going to be good.

 

The Knowing by Sharon Cameron - Add to Goodreads
I LOVED The Forgetting and I am super pumped that there is another book in this series. I can't wait to read this one and found out what happens to this world in the future.

This Darkness Mine by Mindy McGinnis - Add to Goodreads

I have only read one Mindy McGinnis book despite wanting to read more. This one sounds totally amazing and like a fun non-horror-y Halloween read.

Shadowhouse Fall by Daniel Jose Older - Add to Goodreads
I continue to keep this book on my TBR list to remind myself to read it. I loved the first book but I still haven't read this one.

The Wicker King by J. Acrum- Add to Goodreads
This is another perfect read for the Halloween season. It sounds really interesting and I know a few people who have read it and loved it.

New Releases

Before the Devil Breaks You by Libba Bray - Add to Goodreads
I am so excited about this book. I have been waiting for two years for the next book in The Diviners series. This book is out tomorrow and I can't wait for my copy to arrive.

The Book of Dust: La Belle Sauvage by Phillip Pullman - Add to Goodreads
I am a huge fan of the His Dark Materials series and was over the mood to find out that there were more books coming out. I can't wait to read this one.

Backlist Books

Imprudence by Gail Carriger - Add to Goodreads
I read Prudence last month and meant to read Imprudence but never got a chance to read it. I don't have any backlist books in mind for this month so hopefully I can read Imprudence.

Crossing Over: Historical Fantasies Full of Humor and Adventure

Hey all. It's been awhile since my last Crossing Over post. If you're not familiar with Crossing Over it's a feature that stemmed from my desire to recommend an adult book with crossover appeal based on a YA or sometimes Middle Grade book that are similar. I hate that we pigeonhole books into a specific age range and so I try to combat that. Plus it's basically an if you liked, then try but for crossover books. It runs once a month (usually) here and I pick the books based on the theme of what I'm reading. So this month my theme is historical mystery and honestly that was a pretty hard one for me. I feel like I don't read a ton of adult historical fiction and the ones that I do are very different from the YA I read. So I had to repeat a book. But it's been almost a year since I used it and the comparison is just so perfect I had to.

Jackaby by William Ritter
Read My Review / Add to Goodreads

This book is set during the mid-19th Century and is about a women who gets a job working for a paranormal detective. It does a great job combining all those elements together to make something you would not think would work but totally does. There's a great setting full of historical vibes, supernatural creatures, and a great mystery. The series definitely gets better and more complex as it goes on which makes it even more enjoyable.

But I think my favorite part of this book may have been the characters. This is a book that is full of fantastic and complex characters. Seriously, most of the characters in this book were incredibly fun and super likable. I instantly fell in love with Jackaby with his wit and Abigail for her sarcasm and pluck. Plus the secondary characters are all so delightful. And the romances. I'm not one for shipping but I ship these ships for sure.

Plus this is a book that is so much fun. It's full of action and adventure but it is also full of humor. I found myself laughing out loud while reading this book and it is the perfect palatte cleanser because it is just so fun. It doesn't take itself too seriously but if you're a historical fantasy, how can you.

In general, it's a good read and an interesting mystery. It's a done of fun and one of my all-time favorite series. If I have not done my job and convinced you to read it yet then you haven't been paying enough attention over the years.

Soulless by Gail Carriger

Besides the fact that both of these are historical  mysteries that involve paranormal elements, I would say that the main similarities are that they are light-hearted and fun. I really love books that don't take everything to seriously and can make me both laugh and be on the edge of my seat and these totally do that. Plus they combine so many things that shouldn't work and totally do. I love both series and totally recommend them.

August Wrap Up and September TBR

Read in August: Superheroes

YES! This was a great month. Best month I've had in ages. July was pretty but August was amazing. In August I read a total of 17 books. Granted, three of them were audiobook rereads and two were comics, but still. An amazing reading month. And it's good to have a really good month because September is going to be super busy for me. I have a big work thing in the middle of the month and then I love at the end of the month. And this is no small move. But, more on that later. Anyway, as far as the books go it was very hit or miss for me. I really enjoyed a lot of the books I read but I also did not like some. There were some almost 10 star reads and also some 6 star reads. Hit or miss.

For challenges, I am doing okay but not as well as I would hope on some of the individual challenges. I decided to go for a Goodreads goal of 100 books for the year and that was a really good decision because I am totally on track for that. In fact I almost finished with it. I am four books away from that and I'm definitely feeling like 120 is totally doable for the year. But I like being ahead of that challenge and I feel much better about meeting my goals. I am also on track for the Debut Author Challenge of 25 debuts. This month I did great and read 4 debuts, making my total for the year 18. I wanted one really good month for this one and I got that. Now if I just read two a month for the rest of the year I should be good. For the Netgalley/Edelweiss Challenge, I read 3 books this months which makes my total 26 for the year. I'm thinking the 36 target is still doable as all I'll have to do is read 3 a month until the end of the year. For the Rock My TBR Challenge I read 2 book for that this month towards my goal of 25 for the year bringing my totally up to 11 for the year. I'm definitely behind on this one but I might be able to meet the actual challenge goal of 15. And finally, I did 1 post for the Discussion Challenge, making my total 9 for the year which is on track for my goal of 12.

To Be Read in September: Historical Mystery

I am so excited for this month's theme. As some of you may know historical mystery is one of my absolute favorite subgenres. It combines my favorite things, historical fiction and mysteries. Often it also involves some fantasy elements which is even better. I am some books this month that I am super excited about. Some highly anticipated reads by favorite authors and some that I have heard really good things about. I hope it's going to be another good month.

The Dreadful Tale of Prosper Redding by  Alexandra Bracken - Add to Goodreads
I'm reading this right now and I'm really excited about it. I'm a big fan of Alex's work and any time she has a new book out I am all for it. Plus this sounds like an interesting dark historical fantasy.

Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff - Add to Goodreads

I was hoping to read this last month but I didn't get the chance. I am definitely hoping to get to it this month though. I may try the audiobook. We'll see.

Mask of Shadows by Linsey Miller  - Add to Goodreads
Again, wanted to read this last month but didn't get the chance. It's about an assassin and a thief and I really want to read it. Why did I read books I didn't like over this one? Bad call, Cassi.

Warcross by Marie - Add to Goodreads
I love Marie Lu. I love all her books and I am super excited about this one as well. It totally sounds up my alley and I have heard good things from bloggers who have already read it. I'm thinking about starting it soon in fact.

Speak Easy, Speak Love by McKelle George - Add to Goodreads
I cannot wait for this book. It's a Much Ado About Nothing retelling set during the Roaring 20's. It's everything I never knew I needed.

Odd and True by Cat Winters - Add to Goodreads

Despite my desire to read her books ages ago, I didn't read my first Cat Winters book until last year. But I really want to read more and this one sounds amazing. Moster-hunting kickass sisters in the Victorian era. All for it!

Hunting Prince Dracula by Kerri Maniscalco  - Add to Goodreads
Speaking of kickass female monster hunters! I loved Stalking Jack the Ripper and I am super excited about the sequel. On top of more Audrey Rose and Thomas we also get Romania and Dracula. Little known fact: I love all books that involve Dracula.

I read the first book in this series last month and I really loved it. But I listened to the audiobook (which was great) and I'm considering listening to the audio again.

House of Ash by Hope Cook - Add to Goodreads
This definitely sounds interesting to me. Like totally a book that I would like and a good book for the fall. I'm hoping to read it as one of my e-books.

Invictus by Ryan Graudin- Add to Goodreads
Another author that I really enjoy. Although I have not read many of her books. This one is completely up my alley. I mean it's about time traveling pirates. Sign me up!

The Hanging Girl by Eileen Cook - Add to Goodreads
I really enjoyed With Malice so I am super excited for more from this author. Not to mention this seems like my kind of read anyway.

I Hate Everyone But You by Gaby Dunn and Alison Raskin - Add to Goodreads
I like these two's YouTube channel. I think they are super funny and they have great banter. I expect the same thing from their book. 

Backlist Books

Custard Protocol by Gail Carriger - Add to Goodreads
This series is the last of the big Gail Carriger books for me. I really like this world and the characters she writes to inhabit them. I'm excited for the next phase of the series. I've heard good things about it too.

Crossing Over: Recommending Comics

Hey all. It's time for this month's Crossing Over! I think this is the first time I have done two months in a row for awhile. Let's try to keep this up, huh. If you're not familiar with Crossing Over it's a feature that stemmed from my desire to recommend an adult book with crossover appeal based on a YA or sometimes Middle Grade book that are similar. I hate that we pigeonhole books into a specific age range and so I try to combat that. Plus it's basically an if you liked, then try but for crossover books. It runs once a month (usually) here and I pick the books based on the theme of what I'm reading.

So this month my theme is superheroes. I would normally just recommend two books that have superheroes, or superpowers, or whatever but been there, done that. So instead I decided to do things a little differently and take this opportunity to recommend yo you some of my favorite comics based on books that I think are similar.

Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein Read My Review / Add to Goodreads

Then Try:
Bombshells by Marguerite Bennett and Marguerite Sauvage Read My Review / Add to Goodreads

There is one obvious comparison here and it's that both books are set during World War II. But I think with these two, it goes deeper than that. For one thing they are both about women who are serving during the war. For another thing they both involve fighter pilots and spies in some way. But the other thing too is that there are a lot of themes of female empowerment and some great friendships in both books.

Rat Queens by Kurtis J. Weibe Read My Review / Add to Goodreads

Honestly, Rat Queens was surprisingly one of the hardest one to come up with for me. It's one of my favorite comics but I just couldn't find the right book. And then it hit me, Truthwitch. Both books have this great sword and sorcery vibe and involve a bunch of different kinds of magic, even pulling a little religion into it. But books also have kickass female characters who are pretty complex. But both books are also grounded in the friendships of the female main characters.

Then Try:
Ms. Marvel by G. Willow Wilson and Adrian Alphona  Read My Review / Add to Goodreads

What I love about both of these books is that there is a very strong family element to it. They are both really about women of immigrant parents who want their daughters to follow the cultural expectations of their heritage. And both books have main characters who want to be themselves even if that doesn't totally align with what their parents want for them. And in the end it all comes together. Plus both characters are super smart, and tough, and snarky. And there are some fun and lighthearted moments blended with the more serious.

Gotham Academy by Becky Kloonan, Karl Kersch, and Brendan Fletcher Read My Review / Add to Goodreads

So the obvious comparisson is that both of these books take place in boarding schools. Their schools have a lot of history and secrets to unfold throughout the course of the series. Both of these books also have a fantastic gothic kind of feeling to them. They combine all these fantastic elements like supernatural and mystery together really well. They both also have great casts of characters. I only wish maps could have gone to Mme Geraldine's. Or maybe to...

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl by Alexandra Bracken Read My Review / Add to Goodreads

Squirrel Girl was another difficult one to compare. You honestly can't compare Squirrel Girl to anything. She is one of a kind and that's why this comic is amazing. But I did my best. I think the reason I ended up deciding on these two is that they are both really fun books. They both had me laughing out loud while reading. They both also have really amazing heroines who are constantly underestimated but it never stops them from kicking ass and saving the day.

Then Try:
Saga by Bran K. Vaughn and Fiona Staples Read My Review / Add to Goodreads

Both of these books have fantastic science fiction worlds, which is one of my favorite things about both of them. They both also have a lot of characters and a lot of different moving parts. But in the end they come together in a way that makes you root for the main characters. their relationships, and their survival. Because honestly, both of these books are about the characters trying to survive in the face of a ton of adversity.

Paper Girls by Brian K. Vaughn, Cliff Chiang, and Matthew Wilson Read My Review / Add to Goodreads

Both of these books have amazing surprises that I don't want to tell you about because then you will not be very surprised when you read them, which is the best part of these books and the first similarities. The other similarities is that the world of them. They both have subtle elements that are similar but different. Vague comparison is vague.

Batgirl of Burnside by Cameron Stewart, Brendan Fletcher, Jared K. Fletcher, and Babs Tarr Read My Review / Add to Goodreads

So Batgirl was the actual hardest to come up with a comparison for. I know, I know, I keep saying that. But with this book it is absolutely true. I love Batgirl of Burnside so much and I didn't want to not include it but this is not the best comparison. I will say though, both are obviously superhero stories but there is also an exploration of good and evil throughout the book. Plus there is some technology and subtle sci-fi elements to both books. And they are both really fun too!

Alright, there you go. Eight comics that I would recommend based on eight books. These are also some of my favorite comics so even if you haven't read the books, check out these comics.

July Wrap Up and August TBR

Read in July: Mystery

Well, I had a pretty goos month. June wasn't great for me but July was a return to form and I am really happy with my reading this month. In July I read a total of 13 books. Granted, three of them were comics, but still. I had a good reading month. I really enjoyed a lot of them but for the most part they were just kind of middle of the road, pretty good, books. None of them really made a strong impression. They were good, but didn't blow me away.

I am so excited for this month's theme. I have been waiting to do this theme and this is the absolute perfect time with some of the review books I have planned for this month. If you didn't know, I am a huge fan of books about superheroes. I love comics, I love novels about superheroes, doesn't matter. They are usually really action-packed plot driven reads and have this fun characterization and themes that explore the idea of good and evil. Basically all things I love. So needless to say, I am very excited about this theme. 

Books for Review

The Rattled Bones by  S.M. Parker- Add to Goodreads
I'm reading this right now. It's not about superheroes and actually fits last month's theme more than this month's but I started it in that month and am finishing it in this month because sometimes that's how it goes.

The Epic Crush of Genie Lo by F.C. Yee - Add to Goodreads

This is a supehero book and it sounds fantastic. Because not only is it about a person who develops powers but it is about a diverse, unlikely person to develop powers.

Heroine Worship by Sarah Kuhn - Add to Goodreads
I really liked the first book in this series and so I am really excited for the next installment. More killer cupcakes? Yes, please. Also more of Evie and Annie aka Aveda. I'm excited.

Sleeper by Mackenzie Cadenhead - Add to Goodreads
This sounds like a really fantastic book. It seems like an interesting kind of sci-fi read. It's not quite about superheroes but it's giving me superpowers vibes.

Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff - Add to Goodreads

I was planning on reading this last month but I didn't get a chance. But I think Mia is kind of like a superhero. She does have a pretty kickass power.

Wonder Woman: Warbringer by Leigh Bardugo  - Add to Goodreads
This is the book that inspired this whole thing. Because the first book in the DC Icons series comes out this month and I am super excited because it's Wonder Woman. And is written by Leigh Bardugo!

Mask of Shadows by Linsey Miller  - Add to Goodreads
You had me at fight to become the queen's assassin. Who am I kidding, this book had me before that because it's about a thief. This is seriously my kind of YA fantasy.

Shadowhouse Fall by Daniel Jose Older - Add to Goodreads
I've been wanting to read this series for awhile and after picking up this book at ALA (and the first one too) I think it is time to read it.

Beasts Made of Night by Tochi Oneybuchi - Add to Goodreads
I recieved a finish copy of this from the publisher via First to Read. I like never get accepted for those so I was really excited to get one now. Especially because this books sounds amazing!

The Dire King by William Ritter- Add to Goodreads
Maybe one day I will stop raving about how much I love this series. This is not that day. Because I lost my ability to even when I unboxed this book. I cannot wait to read it.

Little and Lion by Brandy Colbert - Add to Goodreads
Not sure if I will get to this book but it comes out next week and sounds really interesting. It might be a nice change of pace for me as it is not my usual kind of read.

Sasquatch, Love, and Other Imaginary Things by Betsy Aldridge and Carrie DuBois-Shaw - Add to Goodreads
This is also not like my usual read but it looks like a fun contemporary that I might read if I need something a little different.

I Am Princess X by Cherie Priest - Add to Goodreads
I have been wanting to read this book for a very long time. I finally bought myself a copy a few months ago as birthday present to myself and as it fits this theme I am totally reading it.

Shadowshaper by Daniel Jose Older - Add to Goodreads
I finally have a copy of this book as well so I am finally going to read it. I've heard good things and it sounds like a book I would love.
