Waiting on Wednesday - A Darker Shade of Magic by Victoria Schwab

A weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine

Title: A Darker Shade of Magic
Series: A Darker Shade of Magic #1
Author: V.E. Scwab (aka Victoria Schwab)
Published: February 24, 2015 by Tor Books (Macmillan)

Synopsis: From V.E. Schwab, the critically acclaimed author of Vicious, comes a new universe of daring adventure, thrilling power, and parallel Londons, beginning with A Darker Shade of Magic.

Kell is one of the last Travelers—magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel universes—as such, he can choose where he lands.

There’s Grey London, dirty and boring, without any magic, ruled by a mad King George. Then there’s Red London, where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. White London, ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne—a place where people fight to control magic, and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. And once upon a time, there was Black London...but no one speaks of that now.

Officially, Kell is the Red Traveler, personal ambassador and adopted Prince of Red London, carrying the monthly correspondences between the royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they’ll never see—a dangerous hobby, and one that has set him up for accidental treason. Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs afoul of Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations, who first robs him, then saves him from a dangerous enemy, and then forces him to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure.

But perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, Kell and Lila will first need to stay alive—and that is proving trickier than they hoped

Why I'm Waiting

You had me at perilous magic, nope you had me WAY before that! I've been really into books about parallel universes lately. I mean I say that, but I haven't really read any. They just sound really appealing and interesting. I'm planning to read at least one maybe more books about parallel universes in December when I do a SciFi themed month. I love the concept of this one too. Three different London's each more dubious than the last.

I loved Vicious, Victoria Schwab's other adult book because of it's intricate world-building and complex characters that walk the line between good and evil. That writing with this concept? Yup, need it in my life! Speaking of the characters I love the sound of Kell, a great name to begin with (am I right Sanderson Army?), and the fact that he is an ambassador that is also a smuggler. I love a good heist plotline and there this sounds like it can only end traumatically after all kinds of fun shenanigans!

I am so on board for so much of this book. I was approved for the preview on NetGalley (go request it) and while I wish it was the entire book, I am really okay with the 130 or so pages. I mean any amount of this book I can read early I am cool with! I need it so bad! It has taken all my self control to not start reading it immediately.

What about you? What are you waiting for this Wednesday? Are you waiting for A Darker Shade of Magic with me? Did you also get approved on NetGalley for the preview? Leave me a comment with your thoughts. Thanks for stopping by and HAPPY READING!
