Top Ten Tuesday - Books That Made Me Cry

A weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish

Usually coming up with a top ten list takes me awhile to craft. I think long and hard about it and usually takes a few days to solidify a list. This list took me five minutes.

If you know me well you know I'm an emotional basketcase that cries often, especially when it comes to books and movies (I cried three times during Ice Age). There are so many books that make me cry, seriously I feel like every book I've read lately has had me shed at least a tear or two. But these books are the books where I cry the most.

Books I Expected to Be Sad Where I Ugly Cry

1.) Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
Every time I read a certain part I sob uncontrollably, even though I know it's coming!

2.) The Heart is A Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers
So poignant and heartbreaking, the title says it all!

3.) Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling
Because Ron and Hermione shouldn't be together! (kidding)

4.) Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins
A certain death hit me really hard!

5.) Allegiant by Veronica Roth
In this book I had crying tally. I cried five times, during obvious and not obvious places.

Books I Didn't Expect to Be Sad and Made Me Cry

1.) The Last Olympian by Rick Riordan
The tears in this book hit me like a piano out the sky!

2.) Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell
It's a book about first love, why is it so sad?

3.) Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
I thought this was supposed to be a fun and lighthearted contemporary romp. Oh Rainbow Rowell, you touch me in the deepest darkest places of my soul that I strive to stifle.
4.) Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
Again a super sad moment hit me out of nowhere and I'm sitting in my car listening to the audiobook and crying!
5.)The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares
This is a book about friendship, how is it so sad?

Honorable Mention to A Song of Ice and Fire, The Sweet Far Thing, and The Fault in Our Stars all of which I expected to be sad and were appropriately upsetting!

But seriously folks, Claire Danes is my cry face icon! If I even look at her crying I have to stop myself from instantly erupting into tears. If you have never seen her in action check out any movie or TV show she has ever been in and you will probably see her cry, it's spectacular or check out this tumblr http://clairedanescryface.tumblr.com

    1. Agreed, Harry Potter 5-7 were all sad. Deathly Hallows was the worst though. I think every 50 pages or so I started crying. Last books usually do that to me!

  2. Great picks and I love those GIFs! HP7 makes me sob the whole way through. Mockingjay makes me cry a lot too. I have been wanting to read E&P for so long now, but after seeing it on so many lists, I am kind of scared! My TTT :)

    1. You should still E&P! It's really sad but it's also funny and sweet and effortlessly wonderful! It's not to be missed.

  3. Now I'm curious which moment in Ready Player One that was, haha :D Can't really remember if there has been one that made me sad but I need to reread that book anyway.

I guess I'm one of a few who didn't cry while reading the end of Mockingjay. Might be because I didn't get it at first. I had to read that one page at least 3 times and even then I couldn't believe it :D

    1. Haha, I cried a few times during Ready Player One. With every attempt to be spoiler free all I'm going to say is Daito. If you're on twitter DM and I'll tell you the rest.

    1. Little Women is the absolute worst book for crying! I know it's coming and I try to hold back the tears but there is nothing I can do!

  5. I like your comment that those last books were "appropriately upsetting" - that just made me laugh! :-)

    1. Haha, yeah a lot of the times I'm inappropriately emotional! But sometimes I'm prepared for the sadness and it doesn't hit me as hard.
