Top Ten Tuesday: 2016 Debuts

A weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish

Two years ago I read almost no debuts, so this year I decided that there were so many debuts that I was excited for that I would do the Debut Author Challenge. It was an amazing choice. I read a total of 23 debuts (I want to get one more in before the end of the year to double the goal of 12) and some of my favorites of the year were debuts. So I am of course planning to do the challenge again. Here are 16 debuts for 2016 I'm hoping to read.

1.) The Love That Split the World by Emily Henry - Add to Goodreads
January 26, 2016 by Razorbill (Penguin)
This is the first of many time travel books I want to read this year. Maybe it's the year of time travel. Either way, this one sounds really interesting. I'm such a sucker for these kind of stories as you can tell.

2.) Revenge and the Wild by Michelle Modesto - Add to Goodreads
Published February 2, 2016
So this one I already preordered using a coupon with Amazon. I'm so excited about this book. YA Western with dark magic and a steampunk world. That's like all my favorite things combined.

3.) The Abyss Surrounds Us by Emily Skrutshie - Add to Goodreads
Published February 8, 2016 by Flux
Space Pirates. So obvious I'm intrigued. Plus the main character has the same name as me which is always a plus. But just generally I love a good science fantasy book and this one definitely sounds that way.

4.) Blackhearts by Nicole Castroman - Add to Goodreads
February 9, 2016 by Simon and Schuster
More pirates. 2016 may be the year of pirates well, February is the month of pirates. Anyway, this is historical fiction about Blackbeard and Ann Bonny. I'm excited.

5.) The Girl from Everywhere by Heidi Heilig - Add to Goodreads
February 16, 2016 by Greenwillow Books (HarperCollins)
Pirates and Time Travel sounds absolutely brilliant. Plus I'm excited to see how this book plays with the time travel tropes with the part in the synopsis about trying to save yourself from no longer existing.

6.) Into the Dim by Janet B. Taylor - Add to Goodreads
Published March 1, 2016 by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
Yet another time travel read. This one has been compared to Outlander, but YA, which I'm excited about. I do still need to read that but maybe I'll start with this one.

7.) Rebel of the Sands by Alwyn Hamilton - Add to Goodreads
Published March 8, 2016 by (Penguin)
I read a few books this year set in fantasy worlds inspired by the Middle East and/or that take place in the desert. This one sounds really good as well.

8.) Stone Field by Christy Lenzi - Add to Goodreads
Published March 29, 2016 by Roaring Brook Press (Macmillan)
I'm a huge fan of Wuthering Heights, it's one of my favorite classics. This is a retelling of that book and also historical fiction set during the Civil War. I'm so intrigued by it.

9.) A Fierce and Subtle Poison by Samantha Mabry - Add to Goodreads
Published April 12, 2016 by Algonquin Young Readers
This book is magical realism, something that I only got into recently but I'm enjoying it. Plus it looks like a diverse read which is also super exciting.

10.) The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi - Add to Goodreads
Published May 3, 2016 by St Martin's Griffin
This sounds like a really fantastic fantasy as well with diverse characters and an interesting setting. I love the fact that it involves the horoscope and reincarnation. It sounds really unique.

11.) The Crown's Game by Evelyn Skye - Add to Goodreads
Published May 17, 2016 by Balthazar and Bray (Harper Collins)
I'm a huge russopohile so a YA fantasy that is inspired but Russian culture is like my idea of the perfect book. I knew I needed to read about this one when I learned about it maybe a year ago.

12.) Ivory and Bone by Julie Eshbaugh - Add to Goodreads
Published June 14, 2016 by HarperTeen
You know what you don't see often, historical fiction about pre-history. That's what this book is. How cool is that? Answer: the most cool.

13.) Fear the Drowning Deep by Sarah Glenn Marsh - Add to Goodreads
Published September 2016 by Sky Pony Press
This is a historical mystery which for me is like genre kryptonite. Plus it takes place in 1913 which is a period I love reading about plus there is a mysterious witch. Obviously I am reading this book

14.) The Reader by Traci Chee - Add to Goodreads
Published September 13, 2016 by Putnam (Penguin RandomHouse)
This book is a YA fantasy that has a tough female protagonist on a mission to save her aunt with clues from a mysterious object. Plus it involves books which have been outlawed. Can you say kryptonite?

15.) A Shadow Bright and Burning by Jessica Cluess - Add to Goodreads
Published September 20, 2016 by Random House
A YA Fantasy that has a main character that can burst into flames, yup I need it. It sounds a little bit like Shadow and Bone which I love.

16.) How to Hang a Witch by Adriana Mather - Add to Goodreads
Published 2016 by Knopf (Random House)
After living in New England for awhile and being such a fan of colonial history of course I'm interested in the Salem Witch Trials. This looks like a cool book about that event.

There you have it, the 2016 debuts that I am excited about. What debuts are you hoping to read? Have you read any yet? What did you thinks? Leave me a comment with your thoughts. Thanks for stopping by and HAPPY READING!

  2. OH! After your list, I'm definitely interested in checking out How to Hang a Witch. After living in Massachusetts for four years, I finally made it up to Salem. . .it was for a book signing and I didn't get to explore much, but it still counts, right? LOL Great list, Cassi. I'm going to check out the rest of these titles. Happy Tuesday
